SIERRA DESIGNS
Sierra Designs began manufacturing highly reliable tents, sleeping bags, and clothing in 1965. The founding members were two young outdoorsmen, George Marks and Bob Swanson, whose near-loss of life in a rainstorm inspired them to develop their original outdoor products. Sierra Designs has grown to this day by spending every minute testing its products and designs while backpacking, climbing, kayaking, and skiing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains just behind them.
When Sierra Designs began its 50-year journey, it had only a few products of its own, such as tents and sleeping bags, but the model that made Sierra Designs a household name around the world was the "Original 60/40 Mountain Parka The "Original 60/40 Mountain Parka" was released in 1968. George, who worked at a navy base in Antarctica, was tired of the uncomfortable fit of military jackets, and Bob, a motorcyclist, was dissatisfied with the leather jackets he was wearing. When wet, the cotton expands and compresses the nylon to keep the rain out, and when dry, the cotton's natural breathability creates a comfortable environment inside the garment. It was truly a high-function parka that anticipated the breathable and waterproof materials of today.
Fifty years later, the "Original 60/40 Mountain Parka" continues to be produced with the same frontier spirit and is still enthusiastically supported by faithful outdoor enthusiasts.
